To commemorate the Mendelssohn bicentennial in 2009, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Emanuel Ax, and violinist Itzhak Perlman collaborated together for the first time and recorded the Mendelssohn Piano Trios. This is the first chamber recording these three virtuosos have recorded together. Yo-Yo Ma is a world-renowned, multiple Grammy Award-winning cellist and is currently celebrating his 30th anniversary with Sony Masterworks.

What could be bad with musicians of this level? This is a gorgeous selection of music that is elegantly played by gifted, extraordinary musicians.

I ordered this because I had seen the video and rarely if ever have I seen artists perform with such pure pleasure evident by their facial expressions. Not to mention the purity of the music they performed. They made me feel the same way, just listening and watching this unique group perform. I even sent a copy to my grandson
just so he could see what is meant by pure pleasure!

A wonderful trio of players. An outstanding recording of great Mendelssohn trios. It couldn't be done better.

Pretty sounds, and not much else

I suppose that I should have predicted this. When three icons of music come together in the recording studio, the results are usually less than satisfactory. These are little more than competent run-throughs by very talented musicians. There's no tension, no drama, no contrast, no momentum.... The outer movements are particularly dull, and as someone else noted, the playing bears very little resemblance to Mendelssohn's marked instructions.

Give this one a pass. Mine is already up for sale.

The best Mendelssohn OP 49 yet!

I've got the Casals recording at the White House in 1961 and the Heifetz/Piatigorsky/Rubenstein version from 1950. I believe the Ma/Ax/Perlmanrecording is the most beautiful, joyful and expressive of the 3.
